Motorola Nigeria, in its almost five decades of operations has recorded phenomenal successes. The telecoms network operator, which started with the mobile radio communication equipment which the Nigeria Police used to fight crime, has today grown in leaps and bounds. For instance, the company is the proud owner of latest project that improves coverage and the quality of voice and data services in rural Nigeria. Last week, Motorola signed a multimillion dollar contract with Zain Nigeria to expand the coverage, capacity and service quality of the operator’s existing Global System of Mobile, GSM, network. Raphael Udeogu, director, sales for central and sub-Saharan Africa, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility, disclosed that with the expansion of its network and implementation of software upgrades, Zain Nigeria will provide services to rural customers that previously did not have access to cellular coverage. According to him, the network upgrade will bring about improved coverage as well as enhanced data capabilities for mobile phone users. “The expansion project has commenced and will be due for commission in few weeks. This assignment underscores Motorola’s commitment to the longstanding relationship with Zain. The increased network capacity being deployed will advance the way people connect and will positively impact Zain’s future telecommunications offering in Nigeria,” he told the magazine. This expansion to rural areas throughout the country will have a positive impact on the economic and social well-being of these communities, further fulfilling and delivering on our brand promise of “A wonderful world.” Motorola shipped one million optical network terminal, ONT, for fibre-to-the-home, FTTH, deployments around the globe last October. In enabling these FTTH networks, Udeogu told the magazine that Motorola ONTs were accelerating the delivery of ultra-broadband services, enabling rich personalised media experiences such as higher capacity video, voice and ultra-high speed Internet services. “Motorola began scaled shipments of ONTs in 2004 and has since risen to a leadership position across the global FTTH marketplace. Supported by world-class engineering, manufacturing and operations, Motorola now offers a full portfolio of international ONTs designed for single family units, multiple dwelling units, MDU, and small businesses,” he said. Naheed Ahmed, communication manager, Motorola Inc, explained that Motorola FTTH solutions provide density and scalability with multiple deployment options for operators looking to deliver residential and commercial services at reasonable costs. “By deploying Motorola’s FTTH solution, operators can eliminate costly, energy-intensive outside plant electronics found in traditional networks. Through FTTH, operators can access a full portfolio of small form factor, energy-efficient indoor ONTs. Motorola’s FTTH portfolio includes,” she said. Motorola which is known around the world for innovation in communications and focuses on advancing the way the world connects. According to Ahmed, the company has moved from providing broadband communications infrastructure, enterprise mobility and public safety solutions to high definition video and mobile devices. “We are leading the next wave of innovations that enable people, enterprises and governments to be more connected and more mobiles. We had sales of $22 billion in 2009,” she said.
